Why two BMI categories?

The World Health Organization's global BMI cutoffs were developed primarily from European and North American data. Research since has shown that people of Asian descent tend to develop higher body fat percentage and higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMI values. WHO's Asia-Pacific guidance lowers the "overweight" and "obese" thresholds accordingly — which is why we show both here for our Southeast Asian users.

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat and doesn't account for age, sex, or where fat is distributed. If your BMI is outside the normal range, a doctor can help you understand what it actually means for your health.
